In From The Cold – our Luncheon Club

spaghetti bolognese

Thanks to Kent Reliance Building Society and the Kent Community Foundation, we have received funding to begin a luncheon club for elderly and isolated local residents.

It will take place on the second Wednesday in the month, with service between 12-1.30pm. A choice of nutritious and healthy options will be available, with tea & coffee (or squash) included in the modest donation of £2.50.

We had a taster session last month – no pun intended – when diners had the choice of spaghetti bolognese, salad or jacket spuds with various toppings. We’re reliably informed that September’s menu will include Toad-in-the-Hole!

DATES:

11 September  – 11 October – 8 November – 13 December – 10 January – 14 February – 14 March – 11 April – 9 May – 13 June – 11 July.

Watch out also for special events throughout the year.

Family Music Fun

Family Music Fun logo

Join us for a fun morning of music, singing and movement at this new drop-in class for babies, toddlers, their parents and carers, who are either mhs residents or in receipt of income related benefits.

Sessions take place at the Net Hub on Wednesdays 9.30am to 10.15am, term time only, starting 20th September. Family Music Fun is a fantastic introduction to the wonderful world of music and a great chance to meet other local parents too, and is brought to us in association with the renowned Musical Bumps organisation.

We look forward to seeing you here!

Please note, this is a 5 week pilot we look forward to extending.

The Tech Workshop and Jobs Help Desk

digital

Facilitated by tutor Ian and volunteer Vicky, this free drop in service runs between 11am-12pm on the 3rd Wednesday in the month.

One of our objectives is to ensure residents are more digitally aware and able to make use of digital options. Ian can teach you Word, email, internet shopping, spreadsheets and more. Simply drop in with your query.

In time, we will also run workshops on social media and blogging, plus a variety of other digital tools, such as Canva, a simple alternative to Photoshop for basic poster / flyer design. These will be free to mhs residents or those on income related support, but a small fee will apply to others.

Vicky has vast experience in secretarial and administration and will help anyone to set out their CVs, job applications and letters, checking for grammar, punctuation, spelling and typos.

Please note the following:

Know your password(s). We cannot help you access all you can do if you’re unable to sign into your device / email etc!

Also, we cannot help with technical issues relating to the operating systems of your device. The drop in service is purely to help you make use of the internet tools available to you.

Tuesday is Time To Talk day!

liz

A recent addition to the activities at the hub is a Time To Talk session, run by one of our volunteers, Liz Lloyd.

“People are really benefitting from what you do each week.”

Taking place on a Tuesday afternoon from 1.30pm-3.30pm, it’s already attracted a regular group of people who relish the opportunity to talk around their concerns.

“I left feeling much more optimistic.”

Combining the opportunity to talk out their feelings with mindfulness, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, the feedback for Liz’s dedication and delivery has been fantastic.

“The group was supportive, informative and well prepared, passing on life skills.”

Feel free to drop in any week. If you feel you need a bit more 1-2-1 attention, a thinkaction counsellor is available at the hub on Mondays.  Call 0300 029 3000 to book.

“I learned to relax and calm down.”

Time to Talk was instigated by national organisation Time To Change, to address mental health issues by supporting those with low level needs to avoid further interventions, and to end the stigma surrounding mental health.

“An eye opener, we all opened up.”

Start the week off well with our Monday morning Drop In Cafe

Walderslade Community Hub

Our open cafe welcomes everyone on a Monday morning for good company and chat over a nice cup of tea or coffee.

From 10am-12pm, make new friends and meet up with old ones, as we throw open the doors to our warm and cosy cafe. Hot drinks are just 60p each, with squash available at just 20p. Biscuits are included!

We often have visitors drop in, offering various help services. Hi Kent is with us the second Monday in the month (from September 11) and Age UK are coming along on September 18. Cleo from Porchlight often drops by too!
